Anyone know if I need to remove the hub to remove brake pads for relining? I don't see how to get the pads out otherwise. The manuals don't cover this. . The brakes on the 51 3/4 are the famous hucksters.

Thanks in advance.

Cyclone

Not a mechanic by any means here, but I have a '48 1/2 ton and had a difficult time removing the rear hubs also. If possible access the adjustment holes on the back side of the hub and begin
turning the adjustment to release the shoes from the hub. My wheel cylinder adjustments were so rusted I eventually had to use a large pulley puller to remove the hub. After a few special
words and a tap-tap with wood block and hammer I got them removed.

I was able to get the drum off and the wheel cylinder off and cleaned up. I don't see how to get pads out. They seem to be interconnected and mounted to a bracket. This bracket appears to mounted behind the hub.

I don't think you need to remove the hub to take the shoes off. Here is the instruction for that in the manual. Removing Rear Shoes

See those pivot pins? On the back side, is a washer. It must be bent to release and slide over the end of the pin. That will let you remove the shoes. This is what the "washer" lock looks like:

Huck brakes are different. They do not pivot at one end, they are more evenly pushed into contact with the drum. That is what those pivot pins do. Take a look at fig.2 from the manual(yes this is the 3/4 ton system): http://chevy.oldcarmanualproject.com/shop/1948_51truck/51ctsm0503.htm
I hope this is helpful.

You want to be very careful with all the brake hardware. I am not sure that the pin locks they sell new fit the 3/4 Ton.

I don't see a reason why a heavy duty retaining ring that he fits the pin grooves can not replace the lock washers. In going to take the calipers to the groves and see if my friend McMaster has a suitable retainer ring.

And you'll let us know what you find, won't you Wade?
I didn't have any luck when I went looking a decade ago
and just ended up using the original style pin locks which
the vendors carried at the time. Other than brake squeal when
applying very light pressure I've not had any issues with the
totally stock Huck brake parts.

I have tried the regular retainers and they distort quite a bit under the spring pressure. Maybe they come in different thicknesses. At least one of the vendors sells them as replacements.
