How wide is a 67-70 1/2 rear end from hub face to hub face? Considering this rear as a swap for my 50 1/2 ton. What ratios were available in them?

Not sure on the numbers but I do know its to wide. Look for a S-10 4X4 rear end.

I used a rear end from a 1967 half ton in my 54 GMC 9300 with 15 x 8 Blazer wheels and 225/75 x 15 tires and they tuck in real good. Gear ratio of 3:73 and t-5 trans makes for nice cruising. I can send a pic if you like- w.beier@shaw.ca

I have a 12 bolt with 3.08 gears from a truck of that vintage and it fits without issue with stock 16" rims on my '50. It may be a bit wider than stock, but there is plenty of room for it.

Suspension Measurements


REAR SUSPENSION:
The following is a general list of rear ends and their dimensions to help narrow the search for a possible candidate to replace the torque tube rear end or just get a better set of gears for highway driving.
Advance Design Trucks seem to be using rear ends with widths ranging from 58"- 62". I'm not sure of the Task Force width ranges at this time.
Contributing information were Bob Welch, J Forbes and various locations throughout the Web and Automotive Magazines.

60" 60's GMC and some Chevy's Dana 44 or Dana 60 with leaf springs 6 lug, Gear ratio's 3.21 to 3.92. GMC V-6 used a 3.21 Dana 44 used a standard chevy 1310 yoke, Dana 60 used the heavy duty yoke which takes the larger 1350 yoke.


Approximate rear end widths measured from backing plate to backing plate.
Add Width to compensate for drums as follows:
4" - 5" for small cars 5" - 6" for intermediate cars 6" - 8" for large cars

In the mind Carl, in my mind.

Might have found a 261, won't know till it's torn down if its
a good one. Now all I have to do is finish a '50, a '54, turn
a horse barn into an auto shop, tend to 6.55 acres and 100
trees, paint the house, remodel the kitchen, fit two overhead
doors into the barn and then, replace the front door, replace
the back door, new screens in the screened in porch, then
paint it. Then maybe, I can start looking for the rest of
that "Not Rod".

If you go with the 261 and put a T-5 with overdrive and a .390/.373 rear gears (thus remaining on topic for those scoring at home), you will wonder why anyone would ever put a 350 in one of these trucks!

So you can smoke the tires up of course Carl.

When and If, I ever did take the ax to one of these truck, the
first thing that I would eliminate would be the beam axle, the
second thing would be the closed drive shaft and it would seem
with the endless choices we have of rear axles and wheels that
it wouldn't be a problem.
The info Jim posted on rear axle widths should be in the tool
box of anybody thinking of replacing the rear axle with an
open one.
Of course if money is no object then you can have a new custom
axle built to your specifications and avoid the search.
