I recently purchased a complete and restored '56 235 and want to install it into my '48. Can I use the original
216 bell housing (has the correct motor mounts) with the new machined 235 flywheel?
I'm reusing my transmission because it's shorter than the 3 speed the 235 came with. (really don't want to shorten the torque tube/drive shaft). The restored starter is 12 volt so it should line up with the 235 flywheel.
I'll have to drill out the front engine plate to line up for the front engine mount. Am I missing something here or is my thought process on this transfer all wrong?

Thanks
Jeff

Bell Housing from the 216 will fit and work. Keep the starter and flywheel together. Front mount plate will work fine after drilling(there is a Tech tip with measurements some where) The water pump is longer. There is a Tech tip and a provider for that. Converting to 12 Volts has a Tech tip as well. Keeping the original transmission, should keep things simple. Look close at the throw out bearing, I got a bad one from my local parts place. PITA to do that twice. Now is a good time to replace any motor mounts if needed. Fix the brake system first. Make it as good as you can. Frustration can cloud judgement so get that out of the way and have fun.

Thanks so much! Clouded judgement is an accurate description, but
not yet frustrated, takes alot to get me stirred up, but easily get confused/cloudy from reading post here and elsewhere on what to replace and what to keep. Sigh of relief from your post telling me the old bell housing and new flywheel off the 235 will
be compatible. Esp.since it's been machined and the 12 volt starter rebuilt.

I've found the tech tips you mentioned, thanks.

In the process soon of replacing all the brakes lines too!
Shopping now for an adequate flaring tool.

Thanks

The differences in the flywheel are small. No problem with the bell housing. Teeth count and pitch are what make them 6 Volt or 12 Volt.
