If there is linkage hanging from the column in the engine compartment and you can see where a shifter used to be on the column inside the cab, it was an original 3 speed

If you are going back to the three speed, consider an OD trans. I have what I think is a 1965 3 speed Saginaw OD trans. It has first gear synchromesh, which I really like. It is a bolt-in swap.

don is the OD trans the kind that requires a T handle in the cab to operate?

The T handle lockout is for trailer towing, or descending steep mountain grades where engine braking is needed. It also comes in handy for city driving where the OD is shifting in and out excessively. No point in eliminating a function like that just because people don't understand what it's there for.

I have driven OD transmissions behind Y-Blocks over 400,000 miles. You definitely want to hook up the lockout and keep the transmission locked out of OD in town because it is free wheeling in OD at below 28 mph and makes it awkward to drive. I would disagree that most users leave the OD engaged all the time. Ford offered BW OD back in the early 40's in Lincoln. In the early 50's OD was very common in Fords. Chev did not offer OD until 55 and it never was very popular in Chev. Ford used the lockout for around town, and a Chev is much easier to drive with the OD locked out at low speeds. It is really awkward to be in town at 25 mph and have the engine drop down to an idle when you let off of the gas. The BW R10 and R11 units are tough but I'm not sure how many times they can stand having the engine being revved up and the sprag gears having to catch it. I agree with Jerry that anyone who eliminates the lockout, has never driven with the lockout functional.

I have a good 62 transmission if you need it. Stock 3 speed. Give a holler.
