For helping keep this great
old truck web site
on the Internet for over 30 years! and not clogged down with Ads! Again, thanks! | | | | Joined: Sep 2015 Posts: 4 New Guy | | New Guy Joined: Sep 2015 Posts: 4 | I am new to this forum and have a couple of questions regarding my Canadian built (according to my GM search) 54 Chevy 5 window PU that I am restoring. From what I am seeing the hood emblems are not correct for my truck. My hood has both the Chevrolet and the 3100 emblems on the lower rear corner. Did the trucks sold in Canada have different emblems than those sold in the US? Secondly, the hood rear reinforcement and tie brackets are not attached to the hood skin. Should these reinforcement brackets be adhered to the hood skin? Cheers

Most hoods are missing them with no ill effects. Carl

Take a look at the data plate on the door post. If it says "General Motors of Canada Limited" and your serial number starts out as 41314_______ then it's a Canadian built 1/2 ton with a U.S. hood/emblems. They were never reproduced to my knowledge until I just stumbled on to this vendor who has them available and appears to say that the same 1300 emblem was used for all AD years unlike the US where there were year by year changes. My concern or I guess more of a complaint about the hood is that it rattles and I have traced it down to the rear supports. Maybe I will try putting some sort of backing between the hood and the brackets. | | | | | Joined: Mar 2010 Posts: 10,299 Renaissance Man | | Renaissance Man Joined: Mar 2010 Posts: 10,299 | Is the back of your hood adjusted so that it fits snugly against the hood-to-cowl seal? If not, that will make a lot of racket. If that area is tight, check to make sure the spot welds near where the cross bracket meets the hood at the hinge area haven't come loose. There is a fairly large gap between the bracket and the underside of the hood, so I wouldn't expect that is where your trouble would be. Carl

Brad. | | | | | Joined: Sep 2015 Posts: 4 New Guy | | New Guy Joined: Sep 2015 Posts: 4 | Yes the hood seems to be adjusted tightly. The rattle seems to be coming from the two hood cross braces (at the rear of hood) I can lift the hood skin away from these brackets. Any thoughts to applying a body panel adhesive at these points. And for Caddee, I am in British Columbia. Does the hood rattle when it is closed? You say that, "I can lift the hood skin away from these brackets." Do you mean, while the hood is open? I know that you can't see exactly what is rattling with the hood closed, but are you absolutely sure it is the hood skin rattling against the brackets? I have seen a lot of these hoods and have never seen one where the skin could contact the brackets. Did you, by chance loosen or remove the center bolts which connect the two brackets together at some point? This would cause your type of problem. Carl

Most has been gone so many years present owners don't even know it was ever there. You can wedge some back in, unsatisfactory, or you can use windshield urethane for a secure bond. Some places it will be 1/4" or more thick so for a neat job having the hood upside down will help. For a near forever fix you can use 3M Panel Bond.
