Now Hacker has made me think about rolling my '49 into the swamp.

Yeah but... Carl we can drive ours down an old tree lined
country road and not worry bout the dust and stones being
thrown up. It's six of one and half dozen of the other,
it all depends on how you want to use your truck. Drive
it every day that the sun shines and have it look used,
or just drive it the day of the show and have it look
showroom fresh. It's really impossible to have it both ways.

The way I look at it: it's a truck. I have fresh paint on mine & I think it looks sharp. Too much added stress to worry about life happening to it though.

Hacker- that is one nice truck you've got & that's about the exact green I had considered painting mine.
Does it have the (very minimal) gold flake in it?

was a good excuse to buy tools though

One has a tendency to do that doesn't one!
I used to have a name for that but in my old age I done forgot
what it was.
Now that my time is limited and the last of the sand is running
out of the glass, I'm not so particular the phrase "good enough"
is being used more often.

I was looking at my old posts from when I first joined this forum and I see where you have helped me out so many times I can't count.

As far as getting old..it happens,

I just couldn't get to good enough....but I have tools( a little OCD )

Next best thing is have one of each. I am well on my way with the second one, which will be a pretty-boy truck. I may have to pay someone to make the final body work perfect and to paint it.

Resist the urge to have the body work and paint done by someone else. You, like me know just about enough to be very very dangerous. I have had many offers to have mine painted for almost nothing, and turned them down because when this truck is done, only one person will have physically had their hands on it. The HUGE thank you, thank you, AND THANK YOU will go to you guys for nursemaiding me along to the end. Besides, MORE TOOLS! It will be my trophy truck even if it ends up not good enough for a trophy.

I traded parts and a truck with someone who is an expert painter.

I also plan to drive my nicely restored trucks.

Each of us has our own interests and strategies and things we enjoy doing with our trucks (and to our trucks) during and after restoration. One path does not suit all of us.

I am doing the best that I can, but I do not enjoy it.
I have the benefit of having a good friend who does high end custom body work for a living who is coaching me along.
I will take it as far as I can, but I will likely pay him to give it the final touches and paint it.

I saw just- a- hacker's beautiful truck which is Forester green. Is there much difference to Juniper green? Will be painting soon. Steve

"Period correct" is not an issue.

I have to apologize as I really was working towards a driver and still intend to use as such.
I cannot drive for work because I put on too many miles(28k so far this year)

as far as the work done, the body shop was not going to let something with their name attached be anything but what you see, their reputation at stake.

That being said, I am really pleased with the results and am very proud of the almost finished product,even though I didn't do it all myself

I get that,I worked on the body and got nowhere.
it ended up being an excuse to do everything else first.
sometimes it is worth it to pay a professional

Dennis, I have saved thousands of dollars by doing everything myself thus far (I work for free!). I guess I shouldn't worry so much about paying some of it to someone else.

I did the same,tried to do it all myself

My wife made the final decision ,based on time alloted to truck work

The difference is Denny,your "good enough" probably still exceeds 'us mere amateurs' best efforts.

Carl,you're doing the hard part,as I'm sure you know a good paint job is only as good as your prep,sounds like your buddy will get the easy part...relatively speaking of course.

Might want to re-phrase that John. I might do a few things
that are beyond the norm when I can't find a good reproduction,
but...I'm miles and miles away from the perfection that goes
into a show car. And believe me, up close it's clear that
"good enough" is part of my process.
Now Deve on the other hand......well.....we've all seen his
pristine shop, pristine chassis and flawlessly constructed
web page. Guy's like him don't know the words, "good enough."


And John, you hit the nail square on the head. 99% of a good
looking body and paint perfection is in the body work and prep.
Of course it never hurts to have the right equipment, correct
understanding of the materials and a certain amount of skill
to lay the paint on properly every time.
But, that phase is only the last hour of what could have been
many months of work for an amateur and weeks of work for a
professional body man. And most of that last hour is consumed
by stirring paint and cleaning up after yourself.
And then in many cases now a days, there's the color sanding
and buffing, again mostly bull work that the average guy can
do at home after the paint is cured.
