I hear both of these terms used in relation to AD trucks but I cant find out what the differences between them are. The 51 3600 I bought last year has had the rear end gears changed to 3.73 (I'm told) and the truck now runs 6 bolt 15" radial tires on it. Still has 216 and 3 speed trans. I don't know if the driveshaft was or had to be changed when the previous owner changed the rear end.
How do I tell which style of driveshaft I have?
Thank you in advance.
Brad.

if you can see the driveshaft turning while the car is moving the driveshaft is "open". If you can't see it, its enclosed in a torque tube

If you can see something like this at each end of the drive shaft, you have an open drive line. If you can't see these then you have an enclosed,or torque tube, drive line.

It's a small world, but I wouldn't want to paint it.

So the 3600 actually had a short torque tube and then an open drive shaft. I have no idea why they came up with such a weird combination but they did.

Probably so they could still use the same, old design transmissions.
