For helping keep this great
old truck web site
on the Internet for over 30 years! and not clogged down with Ads! Again, thanks! | | | | Joined: Sep 2015 Posts: 7 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Sep 2015 Posts: 7 | Hello everyone I am brand new here as of yesterday. I have a 1954 3/4 ton Chevrolet. The kids have finally gone off to college and I have some alone time now to start my truck project.
Step 1 in my mind is to do a little research on my pickup. I have the Serial tak so i know where and when it was made (3/4 ton commercial, Janesville, WI)but it is missing the body tag. Is there a way to track down what the body tag might have been from the serial tag?
I have found great decoder web sites but I need the information to decode. Anyone have any guidance for someone who is very new at this?
Thank you MTCTH

If it tells you Janesville, it is a Vehicle Serial Number - that is found on the "body tag" The other ID would be the Engine Serial Number. Either number/code might have been used for registration/title; however, the Engine Serial Number seems to have been more commonly used. Here is information on 1954 Chevrolet Truck Serial Numbers | | | | | Joined: Sep 2015 Posts: 7 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Sep 2015 Posts: 7 | So from what I understand the serial tag (or yes serial number) just has information that shows model, year, manufacture location and series. On my '54 it is located on the drivers side door column.
There is supposed to be a body tag on the passenger side firewall that shows body type, color code, interior color and engine type. That is what I am hoping to find.

The diagram you sent does not show a firewall tag so maybe trucks didn't come with one? I guess what I am really trying to do is find out the original color

Your journey has just begun. There are publications available for you. Some are on this site. The 2 main pubs are the maintenance manual and factory assembly manual. There are many folks here that are very happy to help.
As for your paint: as stated there is no tag. I scraped down through about 4 or 5 paint jobs to get to my original color. I don't think there is another way.
Good luck and have fun. Remember, it's fun. When I got frustrated, I stopped and went in the house for a while. When I came back to it, it seemed to go better.
