First it uses a special set of points, as it was used with a polarity reversing switch. And second it has a steel gear, only recommended to be used on a steel cam. Your 1956 cam is cast so it is not a good match.

Is it a simple matter of changing the gear from a 56 or later dizzy..... grind retaining pin...remove gear...replace and pin in place on the short cap dizzy??
How fast will the damage occur.... miles or hours of operation??? which part takes the beating.... the steel dizzy gear or the camshaft steel gear.
Just did the change to the short cap to get much needed engine cover clearance on my truck.
Sounds like I have another unplanned job coming!!!!
Thanks for your advice.

Bob C what year is your engine? whats is your distributor s/n I don't have an answer for you but that info might help | | | | | Joined: Aug 2000 Posts: 248 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Aug 2000 Posts: 248 | The engine is a 1959 stock rebuilt 261 engine.... and it did get a remanufactured cam and solid lifters.
I replaced the dizzy with a NOS 1110090 and a new Pertronics as the one from the original dizzy has a different configuration.
Runs fine now but I am concerned that the gear mix may cause me problems at a later date. As the engine cover is not yet fully installed now is the time to make the changes if I am going to do it.
I do have a number of used Dizzy for parts. Is it worth the trouble??
