Well, the way my finances are going, it's going to be years before I can afford to get my truck painted.
Today, I took a look at one of our local Metro coaches that had been "wrapped" (do a google search for "vehicle wrapping" and you'll see what I mean) with printed vinyl.
I wonder if I could order up some of the blank vinyl sheets and wrap my truck! I could even peel it off and change the color if I feel like it. Anyone out there in 'Bolt land have any experience with this stuff?

That would be a neat idea to go. I have also seen a complete car in the electronic spraying fibre!!! eek They put some sort of glue on the metal, wood or fibreglass then using the electronic current spray this fine fibre (any colour) to the metal. The millions of fibres stand straight up on the metal when done. It's mostly for small parts like inside door panels or such. But i have seen a few entire vehicles done in this. It looks like it's all fuzzy and kinda neat. The other bonus is your body work does not have to be 100% perfect! grin I'm not sure how it would weather outside all the time though.

Jim,

Some of that wood grain shelf contact paper would give you a nice looking "woody" look. :p

It's a thought Jim. However, I used to work at an auto dealership who always had "wrapped" shuttle vans-the vinyl NEVER layed down perfectly to all the vehicle's surfaces and it was all pro installed. Keep in mind that these were Windstar minivans, which have flatter surfaces than any antique truck I've ever seen. I don't think it would be any cheaper than doing your own prep and getting a basic Maaco paint job. Sorry to burst your bubble, but I hope this info helps.

Regards,
Wannabe smile

If you like Blue or White the local Marina's around here use alot of "shrink Wrap" to wrap boat for storage. The only Problem would be when you had to pop the hood! LOL

GL - You need to get in touch with your feelings and express yourself better. You are always too careful to be tactful and hold back. Tell us what you really think would ya? lol

I think you'll have a better looking truck if you paint it with a roller than you will if you try to wrap that thing in vinyl. This is the same vinyl that they use for signs and such. It will blister and pucker on all uneven surfaces, celebrating the imperfections more than hiding them.

Paint it with a flat paint and brush or roller and you will have a much better look I think.

Personally, I like the unrestored original look. The more beat the better. Do a mechanical resto and then run that sucker with the rust showing.

Oldcarkook, I think you have the right idea, roll on some "decent" paint and leave it at that.
I just wanted to chime in here to pass along a little unneeded trivia smile Back in 1990 when the "Clean air act" was signed (the start of the VOC rules) we thought for sure this was how we would be "painting" by now. It was projected that regular paint would be gone as the DoDo bird by 2000. But the paint manufactures stepped up and made quality low VOC products to do the job.

Just thought I would mention that, as you were. grin
