I have a '55 6400 2nd series truck. I have 5 studs on the rear wheel hubs. I have 10-hole rims that are hub piloted.
I have seen setups where there is an inner lug nut on the first rim and then an outer lug nut on the second rim. However, the second rim had larger mounting holes.
All my rims have the same size mounting holes (~5/8" diam.). Do I mount both rims and then use one lugnut? What am I missing? What kind of lugnut do I use? Joined: May 2005 Posts: 8,877 | I suspect your have 10 lugs on 7.25" bolt circle. For that vintage they most commonly had a "clamp plate or ring" as Ed mentioned and then the lug nuts hold everything together, the wheels are piloted snugly on the hub. Here is a picture of what that looks like. Also in the picture is a newer lug nut with a large washer face often used without the clamp plate. That particular style is called a "Marsden" nut and I've seen them as original equipment on many of these old trucks. I have two rims mounted to the back axle. You can see that only the lugnut will fit. I do not think I could fit a clamp plate underneath. The side view of the rims shows that they are two different widths - not sure why. Finally you can see a picture of the wheel hub without rims and the two different lugnuts I have - one flanged, one Marsden. Once the rims are cleaned up, should I be able to mount the two rims without a clamp plate? That one HAD 6-bolt RH5's. Your rear hubs,(5-hole wheels),SHOULD be 10-bolt. Rims should match,since you don't want the sidewalls of the tires to rub. "We" have about 8 good 3-piece rims,5-hole,10-bolt), still available,if you need any. What happened to your springs??

I have 6 rims right now but will let you know if I need to replace any of them. I have the springs from the frame off right now to clean up and paint. Glad to see you're making some progress. My'55 2nd-Series didn't use a clamp plate. That's probably why they were 10-lug. My friend's '59 viking 60 bus,uses both flanged,(outside),and Marsden,(inside),and a clamp ring,but his are 6-lug wheels. Passenger-side lugs are right-hand thread,as well.Please keep us posted on your progress! | | |
