I've had this truck nearly 50 years so I don't remember why I put this piece of chain attached to the throttle return spring when I was a teenager. Obviously because the spring doesn't go the whole distance but what is supposed to be there?

** Looks like the throttle return spring. On the AD trucks the end if the spring you have hooked to the spring would run down to a bolt on the oil pan.

OK, so the end of the spring I have hooked to the chain should instead run to a bolt in the oil pan? I can't picture that in my head since the spring is positioned on a horizontal plane and the oil pan bolts are perpendicular @ 90 degrees from the spring. Thanks for your reply marzak.

I dimly recall that in some years, there might have been a hole in bottom edge of the block or in the top edge of the oil pan.

Or, a clip that was used up through 1953: 3659432 - 1941-1953

Also, in some years and maybe only some models, the spring ran back to the brass block drain cock (maybe 1954 and onwards?).

It might be that 1941-1949 235 (and 1941-1953 216) used a different spring than was used on 235s from 1950-1959?

Great! I'm starting to 'get it' now. My set-up has done fine for nearly 50 years but I knew it's always been wrong. Thanks for the pics tcelderman, I'll tinker with what you and marzak have suggested. Thank you so much!

I wouldn't change a thing! I like the farm fix look, and your fix is likely superior to original design.

There is a small ~16ga bracket that holds the accelerator and clutch return springs. The bracket is attached to one of the oil pan bolt holes. The image below should give you some idea.

That "bracket" might be the clip I gave a link-to in a post above.

What is the year of the engine and the truck that has that clutch return-spring set-up?

Tim,

The engine in the image is a 1958 removed from a 1 1/2 ton truck but the bell housing is from a 1942...that's probably what threw you off.

That 1954Z photo shows the hole in the block/pan (for the spring). That is what I have on my 1954 engines.

Earlier engines are listed using the tab/clip near that location.

Later sales photos show different spring connection.
