For helping keep this great
old truck web site
on the Internet for over 30 years! and not clogged down with Ads! Again, thanks! | | | | Joined: Jun 2015 Posts: 149 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Jun 2015 Posts: 149 | Just got a call that my 235 block is fine but the head has multiple cracks. Could cost as much as $1200 to properly repair it. Where is a good place to look or purchase a different head that's been checked over and crack free? Thanks | | | | | Joined: Jun 2011 Posts: 1,901 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Jun 2011 Posts: 1,901 | And how much is a complete rebuild at that shop for a "good" head without the crack repair?
Give me ambiguity or give me something else

That may be a fair & reasonable amount to properly repair "multiple cracks", however. I'm not knocking them. But, I could buy a certified/warrantied rebuilt cylinder head, sell it for $1200, and be making $300 (minimum) to $600. Just making you aware of what's out there; I've been where you're at. Shop around some & you can also place an add in the parts wanted forum. Brad

He would have to refund my cost and shipping usually but set that up prior to a sale so you both know whats expected.
When I sell I crack check and add it to the cost because the buyer would have to pay that anyway. If its bad I eat the cost.
There are plenty of 235 heads around still and plenty of good sellers that will accommodate you on a crack check.
The one listed above is a good deal for a crack checked head loaded. | | | | | Joined: Apr 2014 Posts: 924 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Apr 2014 Posts: 924 | Jeler, I also found that buying a complete "running" engine was the easiest(?) way for me to come across parts. Other buddies may need parts, etc, so we'd do our own disassembly & split my gas/haul cost of the engines. Sometimes people just want things out of their way: make an offer on this. There's a guy in minnesota that carries quite a few 235 and 261's for what it would cost me to have the cracked head repaired. I think you just helped me make my decision. Thank you Jeff

I'm sure the rest of the members have a few, as well. It's just part of it. Good luck! Problem is just because an engine runs, doesn't mean the head or block isn't cracked. They will run just fine, sometimes with a blown head gasket or other serious problem.
The only way is to make a deal to have it checked and only pay for a good component. Otherwise it is just an exercise in buying scrap.
