It can be installed in two ways, only one of them is correct.

Turned to the lock position you cannot push the button. There is a piece with a slotted hole in the assembly and a shaft protruding through it. In locked position the shaft won't go through the slot. In unlocked it will. There is nothing that will be changed when installing in the doors.

"The rod which goes between the key slot and the lock mechanism.." statement means absolutely nothing for the OP (who has a '53), since that statement only applies for '47-'51 trucks.
I posted this information just to see if you were paying attention.
