I have a 1948 Chevy pickup with a 235 and a 4 speed tranny origional driveline. How do I get the slop out of my shifter. .?A lot of slop back and forth

Here are two possibilities:
- floor shifter boot (not original equipment, but it helps diminish the rattle)
- there is a spring at the top of the shifter arm/handle (that spring is "cut-away/through" in the diagram - maybe that spring can be "expanded" to be tighter in the housing/cover)

I had the same problem with my 52. I Removed the shifter, drove out the two pins on the side of the tranny neck and inserted two larger roll pins. This made up for the wear in the shifter and took out a lot of the slop. Both the original pins and the shifter slots wear over time partially due to constant pressure on them by drivers keeping their hand on the shifter while driving. Good luck.
