I just picked up a 235 motor for my 52 1 ton. The serial number on the motor is KAQ159225. Does the KAQ designate this as a Canadian block? I found one little note in the casting sticky which leads me think so.

Adding info;
Block 3835692 April 18 1952

Head 3835499 May 16 1952

Crank 3835501

The motor has hydraulic lifters as well. It was supposed to be from a 52 Chevy Belair, any thoughts?

Mark,

Here are 1952 USA truck engine codes:

Here are 1952 USA car engine codes:

Your code uses characteristics of both codes.

Maybe someone who knows Canadian-codes will post information.

Is there much to taking the hydraulic lifters apart? I have read a couple of posts on using a drill bit to trap the check ball and spring…Any special way to remove the clip?

The clips are really easy to remove and install. I used a needle nose pliers. Don't let any of them get away from you! smile

It appears that all but one lifter in this motor was replaced with a different type. The check ball is replaced with a plate and a small spring.
This is what I would say is an original which I only have one; http://s1142.photobucket.com/user/52_Ton/media/Motor/IMG_2129.jpg.html?sort=3&o=2
This is what the other eleven lifters look like;

Are these valves adequate for this motor and should I find one more to replace the odd one so they are all the same?

they are interchangeable. Problem is, the cam 'seats' to each lifter, so you can't just put them back anywhere. They must go to the slot they were in. Maybe you know that already.

I personally wouldnt use 11 of 1 kind and 1 of another. I would replace them for a complete set.

I did have them arranged in the order they came out…..until I knocked the tray over and the order was all mixed up. Do you know where I can get new lifters? I tried Summit to see what came up but for some reason I didn't get a result. I'm searching under a 52 Belair which should do it.
One other question is could I go back to solid lifters from my original block?

Hydraulics are much easier to maintain. RockAuto has them. Search under the engines year Belair to get the correct ones. You can also get sets off ebay now and then. I do not know if you can go from hydraulics to solids anytime you want. Someone else with more knowledge will have to chime in.

If you are still interested, the KAQ engine serial prefix does not seem to reference a Canadian model.
K = 1952 year
A = Passenger model
Q = RPO 317 Model 2100 Automatic Transmission Option Tonawanda Plant
