Working on a friends rig which has a broken door window. I was able to remove the lower metal channel off the glass with a little help of using a few drops of gas to help soften up the rubber piece which holds the glass to the channel.

What is the correct name for this rubber piece??? It fell apart so I need to order more, along with a whole new channel kit including the wing window rubber, etc.

What's the best way to install the new glass into the metal channel? Push the glass into the channel or the channel onto the glass?

Ah hah! Called channel filler?

I use black RTV sealant. It holds very well and the next guy who has to take it out won't hunt you down and kill you for using polyurethane adhesive (which s overkill).

If you use RTV or other liquids (I've even used body filler in a pinch), use something to center the channel on the glass untell it sets, if the channel cocks it can cause things to bind and possibly break the glass. I've seen tempered door glasses broke because of this. Thin, narrow cardboard like razor blade wrappers works good for this, a piece at each end 3/4" inch or so from the end of the channel. This also stops the glass from contacting the bottom of the channel, which can also cause problems. John

Used the glass setting tape from Classic Industries. Worked perfect, just lightly tapped the frame onto the glass. Held setting tape in place with small pieces of blue painters tape. When glass was set and bottom retainer on I cut around the perimeter with a new razor blade to remove the visible setting tape and glass was tight and well set. IF, you ever have to replace it will be a snap.
Removal of frame is easily accomplished with a little heat. This prevents bending the frame when removing. Heat never seem to effect the old glass in any way.
I saved my old glass for patterns if need be.
I was going to use RTV but was talked out of that idea by our favorite Stove Bolt guy mr. Denny G. Glad I listen to the old codger!,

Thanks for the replies. I just ordered some filler strip from the filling station which I believe is the same as the setting tape. Gonna give it a try.

Keep your fingers crossed that the tape is the correct thickness for your glass. I ran into that very problem, which is why I went with the RTV. If you use the RTV, avoid the temptation to remove the excess RTV from the glass before it fully cures, then just use a razor blade.

Carl,
I'm already thinking about that, thus why I bought 3 feet of 3 different thicknesses. Yes, if all fails, here comes the RTV.

I would have loved to have lucked into the correct thickness when I did mine, but lacked the foresight to order more than one size tape.

If the channel is a little too wide for the pack/glass combo you can gently tap the sides in with a hammer with it off the glass!!. The rubber pack can be oiled on one side and warmed with a propane torch which makes it softer and makes the install easier, the remaining oil then swells the pack making good fit. This won't work with the cork/rubber type however. Hope this helps someone sometime. John
