I managed to adapt a block from a later distributor to get on the road again. The new block has a recessed round nut on the outside with a slot on each side. I used a small screwdriver to tighten it.
Is there a special tool for this kind of nut? The old time auto parts store loaned me one of theirs said I will like it so much I will want to buy one. I said this looks familiar to me.
When I got home I went into the museum, my dad's tool box where I keep his oldest tools. There in his tool box was three of them.
Next time I went back to the parts store I said thank you for loaning me the tool for just in case. Though would you like to buy some of them from me for my dad has three. We both had a laugh.

Just about everybody at our shop except former Ford dealer mechanics had one. I think I've still got a couple of them stashed away in Dad's old tool box.
The shade tree method was to grind a narrow slot in a straight-blade screwdriver to straddle the stud.

I have always so far anyway been able to get that round nut off with a small screwdriver. I thought that was the only one they sell for the Delco and that I would file it down to fit the .310 hole in mine. As soon as I ordered it showed me another option which is the exact part for the 54 with the keyway on the shaft. I am trying to have the order changed at the moment.
