1946 2 ton 4 speed.

Would the truck having a power take off, I assume that is what that is called because the rack body truck has a lift bed, would cause the transmission to need more transmission gear oil to fill it up?

Q. Does 1946 2 ton 4 speed have PTO "Power take-off" ?
A. Yes

Q. Would lift bed, cause the transmission to need more transmission gear oil to fill it up?
A. No

1946 Chevrolet truck transmission Specifications page

On bottom of page, left column, it says "Power take-off"
Look to the right, 4th column, which is the 2 ton, 4 speed tranny, Power take off left side.
Bottom row says 5 1/2 pints lubrication capacity.

Lift bed hydraulics has its own separate fluid system.

What series number is your 2 ton truck?

We do not know the exact series number. Though being it has a 160" WB it and 2 ton that it is a 6400.

And we just put in 5 1/2 pints in.

Is there a vehicle id plate on the truck?
If you have the stamped number on the plate or on the title you can enter in The VIN Buster
It should give you the series info.

Been to vin buster before and it does not say which 6400 it is.

It can be a 6402, 6403, 6408, 6409, 6412, 6418, 6419, 6422, 6429, 6432

jorb,
Reread the 1st post,
He,s asking if the TRANS needs more gear oil cause of the Added PTO.
Has Nothing to do with the Hydraulics of the lift/hoist mechanism and quantity of oil.
regards,
steve sr.
P.S. in that regard,Im gonna hazard a guess at about a 1/2 pint to get it to the side plug in a SM Box.
wink

According to the 1946 Chevrolet truck transmission Specifications page
it looks like All 1946 4 speed transmissions came with PTO.
The spec sheet does not indicate a lubrication capacity, for a 4 speed transmission without PTO.
So, if a person wanted find out the difference in lubrication capacity between a tranny with PTO and a one without.
You would have to find a tranny without PTO and fill it up and measure the difference.

Or, In 46 they offered 2, 4 speed trannys, one with PTO and one without, and there is no difference in lubrication capacities between the 2.
Or, 5 1/2 pints is sufficient for both.

Oh Boy,
Put the Recommended amount in the box.
Stick finger in hole.
Can you touch oil?
If not, ADD till Just Below Fill Plug,
Good to GO!

Yeah, now I will sleep better at night too.

It really doesn't matter what level you choose to fill the transmission as all of the overflow will run out of the front main shaft housing weep hole...onto your clutch.

Paul,
I understand what You are sayin about the oil levels,
Especially the older boxes that have no front seal.
Thats why I ALWAYS Went with the oldtimers rule of thumb (or pinky joint) Filling gearboxes.
Leave It Just below the fill plug and it Don,t Leak on the clutch.
And were talkin HARD Working Tow Trucks and Flatbeds out there chasin wrecks and whatever.
To add...
I,ve NEVER had a trans failure due to lack of lube in over 40 Years.
Stupid operators are another story,or is that"steering wheel holder" LOL
