I was waiting in line for gas and noticed the trucks temp gauge going up so I shut it off. Then it wouldn't start until it cooled down. Do I have an issue and how can I chase it down? Are there steps I can follow?

I have an alternator, do not have Dave's 'water pump re-locator' on this '56 engine but do have it installed on a '62 261 I am in the process of getting together for a summer install.

It fits well and put the water pump in the right place. I am thinking of replacing my coolant to see if that helps. Not sure if a 50/50 mix or all coolant is best. Thanks

It cranks over but not fires?
Have you checked the spark while it is cranking?
If that is good then sounds like a fuel problem related to heat.
If it cranks and if you have spark then splash a table spoon of fuel into the carb see it if runs for a few seconds.

A 50/50 mix freezes at -37 degrees F. and boils without pressure applied at about 220 degrees. If it gets colder (or hotter) than that in Tennessee, I'm moving to Tahiti!
You might be experiencing "hot soak" where the fuel in the float bowl boils and percolates into the intake, causing a flooded condition. Try holding the throttle wide open and cranking until the engine starts to clear the flood.

If you run your truck for half an hour or more (takes less on hot days), shut it off and restart it within five minutes, it'll be fine. If it sits longer, the heat under the hood from the hot engine causes Jerry's "hot soak". It will also cause the fuel in the fuel line from the pump to the carb to expand, feeding more fuel into the carb even after it's shut down. If you were to pop the hood you would find your carb is wet from excess fuel seeping out. | | | | | Joined: Mar 2010 Posts: 10,275 Renaissance Man | | Renaissance Man Joined: Mar 2010 Posts: 10,275 | You can shine a light down through the carb and look for pooled up gas on the bottom of the intake manifold. More of the excess gas ends up there than what seeps out of the outside of the carb.
