I have some pitted through areas. I know they can be filled but how do you stop rust from the inside of this union from recurring? Thanks in advance for any ideas. | | | | | Joined: Sep 2001 Posts: 29,269 Bubba - Curmudgeon | | Bubba - Curmudgeon Joined: Sep 2001 Posts: 29,269 | Several years ago, Bob Adler (an expert on Advance Design restorations) wrote an article on this topic in "Pickups 'n Panels in Print". As I recall, he suggested cleaning off as much old paint as is possible and they dripping a phosphoric acid treatment into the seam (like Eastwood's OxySolv). I do not remember if he then neutralized with a basic solution (like Eastwood's Metal Wash). This would then have to be completely dried before epoxy priming (or using a metal etching primer and then epoxy). Maybe someone has a copy of this article (I cannot find my copy).
I think I would clean the metal and then drip in a rust converter (such as Extend). Then epoxy prime. This is what I did with factory-lapped seams in my (soon to be restored) suburban.
The cab seam is a problem area in Advance Design pickup cabs.
