It is stuck in 2 gears. | | | | | Joined: Feb 2002 Posts: 12,029 Cruising in the Passing Lane | | Cruising in the Passing Lane Joined: Feb 2002 Posts: 12,029 | as Cletis says, you need to clean up and adjust the shift box on the lower steering column Bill | | | | | Joined: Jan 2008 Posts: 4,962 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Jan 2008 Posts: 4,962 | And get in the habit of making an "H" pattern instead of just pushing it up into second. | | | | | Joined: Oct 2006 Posts: 9,671 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Oct 2006 Posts: 9,671 | Real common problem with the column shifters back in the day as the shift box becomes worn or gets out of adjustment. Had many 50's stick shift Chevy's myself when I was a teen in the 50's and 60's and working in a Chevy dealership at that time I saw this problem often. DG

The shift box gets confused when there is slop in any of those areas. I replaced the rubber grommets with bronze ones. These babies let you really feel the transmission shift. I welded metal to all of the worn ends and ground them back to as-new condition. Carl
