Most likely your shift linkage is worn sloppy or out of adjustment. It is stuck in 2 gears.

as Cletis says, you need to clean up and adjust the shift box on the lower steering column

And get in the habit of making an "H" pattern instead of just pushing it up into second.

Real common problem with the column shifters back in the day as
the shift box becomes worn or gets out of adjustment. Had many
50's stick shift Chevy's myself when I was a teen in the 50's
and 60's and working in a Chevy dealership at that time I saw
this problem often.

Another cause of this is badly worn rubber grommets on the rods at the shift box, and worn ends on all of the shift rods. The shift box gets confused when there is slop in any of those areas.
I replaced the rubber grommets with bronze ones. These babies let you really feel the transmission shift. I welded metal to all of the worn ends and ground them back to as-new condition.

Yesiree it does! I did the same with mine. Makes for nice solid shifts, no slop at all.
