For helping keep this great

on the Internet for over 30 years! and not clogged down with Ads! Again, thanks! | | | | Joined: Aug 2013 Posts: 255 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Aug 2013 Posts: 255 | Just bought last week, was delivered late Friday. Bled the brakes and checked fluid levels, charged the battery and started it today. It runs OK, drives OK, but does she stop on a dime. The. Brakes really surprised me when I first went to stop. Work very well. Of course, only got it up to 40 mph. It needs the 5 speed overdrive tranny. It's got the 5 speed direct drive. Real happy right now. Thinking about a modern driveline though. Was surprised to see a new post. didn't think anyone ever looked here. LOL.Haven't been doing much work on it. Busy building a new house. Did convert to 12 volts with an alternator and put in a Pertronixs ignition module. Was really happy with all the results. Used a 12v battery to get her started and trailered for the ride home. I bought a new 6v battery and she cranks over now as well. Would love to hear about your 12v conversion and if it was worth the time and money. If so did you use a complete new harness package and what type? Thanks in advance for any info. | | | | | Joined: Aug 2013 Posts: 255 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Aug 2013 Posts: 255 | No new harness yet. Just put new battery cables, 2 guage, and used a new 10 guage wire from single wire 65 amp alternator to the battery terminal on starter. Had to change the pulley on alternator to a 201-01005 from J&N Auto Electric catalog, or a 24-7100 from WAI catalog. Also Changed lights everywhere, put the resistor on fuel guage. Don't have any other electronics yet. I did change to Pertronixs ignition and 12. Volt coil at same time. We'll worth the money. Starts right up, headlights way brighter. I like it. | | | | | Joined: Oct 2013 Posts: 5 New Guy | | New Guy Joined: Oct 2013 Posts: 5 | Thanks for the info. The 6v starter should work fine on 12v, it will just run faster making the truck start sooner. If you have electric booster reel hose rewinders that should be changed to 12v as well as the Beacon Ray light motor. I like the stance it has. | | | | | Joined: Aug 2013 Posts: 255 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Aug 2013 Posts: 255 | Fireguy49, there's a couple good right ups on converting to 12 volt on here and I think Jim Carter trucks. I just followed them. I didn't mention heater or other motors sirens .... Because my truck was pretty bare of electronics. Don't forget to get that pulley for the alternator . Use an air impact wrench and leather gloved hand to remote pulley nut, comes right off, no struggles with wrenches. I' m real happy with results. Your truck looks pretty well loaded. You might want to keep it 6 volts. You can get 6 volt Pertronixs to replace points if that was desired. Spanky, my tires are 9.00x20 . | | | | | Joined: Aug 2013 Posts: 255 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Aug 2013 Posts: 255 | Runs and drive on TBI fuel injection with dual Fentons into dual Porter mufflers. Top speed has gone from 47 to 57 on flat ground. Runs great but still needs data logging and final tune to finish, then final placement of wiring and components. Will post video as soon as I download. Jim | | | | | Joined: Aug 2013 Posts: 255 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Aug 2013 Posts: 255 | | | |
