For 11 years I thought I had a '54 5 window but yesterday I hauled it from Colorado to Utah and gave it a once over. I discovered that based on the serial number it is a '55.1 5 window. I used the tool on here to see what factory it came out of and stuff like that thanks to Achipmunk, but I am wondering what other resources are out there to give me insight on this truck i.e. how many were produced, what options were available, what options mine had upon production, etc.

My plan was to drop a 350/th350/Ford 9" in the truck but if it is an extremely rare vehicle, I want to do it justice and bring it back original. I am working on engine/trans/rear end casting numbers to see if they are matching as well as I am not sure.

Any help/resources would be much appreciated.

Danny

This 1955-2nd Series Chevrolet Truck Specifications Manual is provided by GM at the Heritage Center website.

Warning: it is a large PDF download.

No one has posted GM information on production numbers (overall truck production or production of each model) for 1955-2nd series trucks.

You might want to by a 1954 Truck Shop Manual and the 1955-1st Supplement. Both of those manuals are on-line at the website maintained by Keith Hardy.

In another lifetime I had a 55.1 panel that I'd almost sell my soul to the devil to get back. <CLICK> I read somewhere back then that there were only 750 of those made but I have no idea if that's true or not. One thing for sure is a 55.1 is more rare than 54 or earlier simply because they were only produced for part of a model year. My vote would be to restore it rather than restomod it.

No-brainier. Meticulous restoration to as-built.
I go to a lot of shows and have never seen a 55.1.
Guys like me will be swarming around a restored one, and be totally beside themselves with disappointment to see one rodded out.

Yeah, and Dan you came to the exact right place. Tim's website is devoted to all things 54 and 55 so you really want to familiarize yourself with http://www.1954advance-design.com

For general Advance Design era information you can peruse my site as well. But really, this forum and the Shop Tips section is THE goto resource.

Anyone can chop and slice a vehicle. But to finesse an old treasure back to its original glory takes special talents and the reward goes beyond the hotrods. People really appreciate a good original, or with mild modernizations.

My site has a seatbelt instruction among other things to help get you started getting it on the modern road. Good luck on your project! That was the truck I had as my first pickup!
