I have been trying to install my spare onto the
original tire carrier under my short box 3100.
My problem is that the spare never seems to get tight against cross frame rails.Is it supposed too be tight or is a slight wobble normal?
Any info is appreciated.

It's been a fairly long time since I had any dealings with the original style carrier on anything older than 2000, but I seem to recall the AD's had a bit of a gap which allowed the tire to move a bit.

What year A-D?

My 1954 spare tire does not move at all.

Otherwise it makes for a noisy ride

It's tight on my 49 also. You may need to use spacers on the threaded hook inorder to get it up tighter.

My 50 is the old style I think like yours Canada. Mine does not hit the cross member or anything else. It will sway just a bit under the truck using the J-Hook. I thought they were designed that way. The tire would hit the slide before it hits the bottom of the crossmember? I could be wrong. I noticed that you would have to add spacers or do something extra to get it that far up. I don't want mine to touch because that means scraping the paint. The way it is built, it isnt going anywhere in any case. Very sturdy design.

I didn't like the sway, so I decided to incorporate the system into my trailer hitch system. Now its solid as a rock.

Upper saddle should bolt the wheel solid to the lower support.

And I rest my case. The top saddle is designed to set solid up against the cross member. Now you know for SURE. Denny knows! I think he was there. LOL! Seriously Thanks Denny!

I got a hold of an original tire carrier but was missing the top saddle peice. I had never even seen how it all goes together so I built the top saddle myself. I assumed that it squeezed the side wall of tires downward. but I see now that it actually only touches the center of rim and both its ends are bent upward to come against frame cross member.

Put an add in the swap meet, they come up fairly often.
The 3100 is much more common than the 3600, there is a
difference and those are pretty hard to find.

Isn't the tire carrier in your photo for the 3/4 ton?
The parts book shows a different carrier for the 1/2 ton or am I reading something wrong?

Spare Tire Carrier

The illustrations in the parts book do not show the exact part
used on any specific vehicle. They are generic illustrations
meant to direct you to the proper group for that family of
parts. For instance, they may have a wheel illustrated and
labeled as group 5.803 but there are nearly five dozen
different part numbers for wheels listed. Obviously they
couldn't illustrate all five dozen of them.
This has been a subject of debate in the past, but my feeling
is that the illustrations of the carriers show the pre-AD
style for the 1/2 ton and the AD style for the 3/4 ton.
In reality the early 3100 and 3600 AD carriers are very
similar. The only difference I've noticed is in the rear mount
for the slide. In fact, the carrier on my truck is actually a
3100 with a new rear slide mount that I fabricated. The 3100
and 3600 crossmembers are in different locations and at different heights.
