Again, thanks! | | | | | Neverdone Unregistered | | Neverdone Unregistered | I had a leak in the engine end of my oil pressure line . although i believe it is under THIS fitting . Is there a way to fix this ? I thought I could hust move the fitting back up the line , cut off an inch , deburr it and install it back on . question is .. is this a pressure fitting.... and can it be fixed this way? DO NOT want a plastic replacement Thanks Dan | | | | | Joined: Feb 2004 Posts: 29,814 Kettle Custodian (pot stirrer) | | Kettle Custodian (pot stirrer) Joined: Feb 2004 Posts: 29,814 | You will need a new fitting, and they're hard to find. It swages itself to the tubing the first time it's tightened, and is not able to be removed and reused. Jerry

When I have never made a repair before I tend to think to much . I went down to the local [ old established ] parts store and they had some of the old fittings in stock . That repair went good . The parts were so old that they were only .57 cents each also ...I even beat inflation today
As it turns out the leak was in the line to the external filter.

That type of fitting was very popular in the 40's and 50's- - - -Ford even used them on fuel inlet fittings for carburetors, IIRC. They're also used to seal the through-the block oil line on the splash-oiler 216's and 235's. Jerry

I suppose anytime this oil line is removed from either the back of the oil pressure guage or engine the fitting has to be replaced? If so, I have to change them out, both ends. I'm getting ready to swap my '59 Apache's 235 for a 283 and don't plan on using a pressure switch, but keep reading direct pressure.

The fitting bites into the tubing a little to seal the first time it's tightened, and as long as it's not overtightened, it swivels on the tubing and can be removed/replaced many times. Just don't overtighten it, as it loses its ability to seal as the tubing is compressed further with each installation. Eventually it develops a leak from squeezing the tubing down too far. Jerry

I had removed my oil line last week to remove the instrument cluster and leak checked it after reinstalling it and there wasn't any leakage. I will replace the line and fittings anyway when the engine is changed, the line could use replaced.
