Joined: Apr 2002 Posts: 2,168 | I ordered some sheet metal and I'm going to fabricate my own beds using te tech tips for assistance. I am running out of room around the yard and sheds as I will be building my 9ft box for my 1 ton first. I initially planned on repairing my 9footer but it will be cheaper, better looking and better built to start from new. I will be able to spruce up some of the factory shortcomings like chains.
Steel arrives on Thursday! Enough material for two AD boxes: $450 (no fenders or tailgate)

I'm thinking about welding a cap on the sides of my front bed panel 'roll' at the top (small 55.2 3100). Hoping to keep the wasps out that way. Have you thought about plugging that opening? Or, are you going to leave them open?
Is that side rail solid steel? Sorry for so many questions- just curious & trying to get some pointers. I like seeing folks make their own parts, but I'm really new at trying it myself.

Joined: Apr 2002 Posts: 2,168 | Brad, I plugged up everything I could on the front panel. I cut little templates and then cut steel to cap it. The brace in the middle is closed off along with the top roll. Hopefully water doesn't get in there too. For the bedside roll I plug the ends with an 1&5/8" expansion/freeze plug. It fit like a glove and looks quite custom. The top roll is just 16 ga exhaust tubing. Joined: Apr 2002 Posts: 2,168 | Here's my progress on my 9t bed. need to build the back cross sill and install the tailgate. I had a couple little hiccups. 1. My angle strips are off by a 1/2 hole. I'm going to extend the holes and weld up the back excess. 2. One cross sill was badly worn and required a replacement to be built.
