I recently bought a 49 coronet with a gyromatic transmission, and the carb is a stromberg bxves-3 with a anti-stall solenoid on it. the shop manual calls it a dashpot solenoid, but whatever you call it mine seems to be bad. any ideas as to where to get one of these? the tranny won't shift right if this solenoid isn't on there, so replacing the carb isn't an option.

On every vehicle I have ever restored, there is always at least one item that is made of either unobtanium or verypricium. You just found that item on your vehicle.

Options (probable cheapest first):

(A) replace the transmission
(B) replace the Stromberg with the Carter that was also used
(C) buy a new solenoid

Carter used a different solenoid, and they are at least reasonable.

The Gyromatic can be shifted manually using the clutch as you would any 3 speed. With some practice and a good solenoid you can do 5 forward gears. My first car (1950) Dodge had one. By the way don't back out of your drive and slam it into 1st and dump the clutch at full throttle. Don't ask me how I know!

Was unaware the transmission could be shifted with the clutch. This would obviously be by far the least expensive option.

Most of the production would have been with Carter carbs. And Carter had probably 100 times (or more) the dealers compared to Stromberg. The Carter dealer assortment contained one of the solenoids; so, while not inexpensive, they are around.

The Carter solenoid was housed in a metal housing, so physically much more forgiving than the bakelite unit used by Stromberg.

The solenoid was considered an assessory by the commercial carburetor rebuilders; so a rebuild carburetor would NOT have the solenoid. The consumer was to reuse the old solenoid prior to turning in the old core for the exchange value.

Jon.

@ carbking.... well, replacing the tranny is out of the question for me, its an all original car that is completly original down to the seats, so what model carter should I look for or where can I get a solenoid? I really am trying to keep it as close to factory as I can. @ Martin.... I had heard that you could drive it like a normal standard, but never knew anyone who actually owned a gyro, by the way, thanks for the heads up grin

also, would a D6G1 Carter BB carb be a direct replacement?
