I have purchased new 3:55 ring n pinion gears (in addition to the complete rebuild kit) for my stock 1948 Chevy 3100 to replace the current 4:11 gears. I would like to cruise a little faster than 45mph but also reduce the rpm on the 216 while cruising. This upgrade is more than my expertise so I am going to have to have it done professionally. Should most shops be able to do this or should I ask specific questions to decide you to use and what would be an average price for doing it? I am in the Houston, TX area if there is somebody you would recommend.

Setting up the proper tooth contact pattern and backlash is an absolutely essential part of ring and pinion gear installation, and there's only one chance to get it right. The gear teeth are lapped together during manufacture, and they must be set up in that exact relationship as they're installed. Wrong assembly will result in short gear life and/or noise.

New pinion and carrier bearings, seals, and small parts should be installed along with the gears for the best results. A properly set up gearset should outlast several engines, transmissions, and body parts. Rear ends are some of the longest-lasting parts on any vehicle.

Just had mine done on my 48 3100. I really like the results and added a dual cell master cylinder. Make sure you stop. Just my thoughts

I had planned on the dual master cylinder upgrade as well. I assume you had it done? What do you think I should budget for the job?
