1. I noticed on the driver side near the front of block that the gasket blocks 2 coolant passages. (Not the steam holes) Why? The old gasket is the same. Curious as to why these 2 holes to the head(848) from the block would be blocked off.
2. Should I use a sealant on the gasket? It doesn't say whether to or not. It is a fibrous one with steel/copper rings.
Head and block are flat, clean and ready to go.

Steel or copper shim gaskets, yes, but not on a layered type. If the holes are blocked, there's probably a good reason. One of my students opened up some head gasket holes in a small block Ford V8 that he thought the factory "forgot" and ended up with an instant overheat. It turns out the gasket was made to work interchangeably from one cylinder bank to the other by observing the "top" marking, and the holes in the front of the head were supposed to be blocked so coolant would flow toward the rear of the engine. Don't second-guess the people who make the gaskets.

Only oil on threads is needed.

| | | | | Joined: Aug 2012 Posts: 1,214 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Aug 2012 Posts: 1,214 | I'm unsure if the 216's head bolts extending into wator/oil galleries but all I used was oil on the threads of my 216's head bolts and so far no problems/leaks with approx. 10k miles on it. Now my 216 pizzes oil out other locations but not through the head bolts  re. head gasket sealers, I've never used any type of sealer on a head gasket. From small air cooled to large diesels, I use the proper head gasket, clean "true" surfaces and the proper torque technique on oiled head bolts.
