I am about to put the final touch on my 41 with 235 by putting the exhaust system on it. I want a stock system. What muffler will be correct? I don't care about it being judged, I just want it it to run correct. Dave

It would have probably been about a 6" round muffler with inlet and outlet in the center. You can look through the Walker catalog and find one with the dimensions to fit your vehicle.

I recalled reading recently that the pre-Advance-Design trucks might not have had a straight-through muffler, so I looked at the Shop Manuals.

1941 truck muffler " . . a new unit muffler of integral construction, employing reverse-flow and diffusion principle used so successfully on passenger cars to obtain quiet operation".

If you interested in it being OK for driving: as crenwelge posted, the later straight-through design will work fine.

I think the United 6-005 and 6-0015 are mufflers that are constructed pretty much like like the one Tim referenced. The ones with offset inlet and outlet are usually constructed like that. The oblong have more packing. United is a rather small company and has live people on the phone.

and actually had a real live person answer the phone. "Your
call is very important to us, please hold."

A few years back I tried Walker for exhaust system parts for
an AD and didn't have any luck. With 99% of the stock AD's
using the same exhaust/muffler/tail pipe, you would think that
someone would be making them. The common answer seems to
always be, try your local muffler shop. Their common answer
always seems to be, we don't have the data to bend those,
bring it in and we'll fit something to it.

Wish I had access to a Bendpak for a couple of weeks. I'd
work out a formula and turn out a few thousand exhaust and
tail pipes and start selling them.
As simple and basic as those mufflers were, once again, I don't
understand why Counterparts hasn't had a boat load of them
made up and shipped over to Orange, CA.

I called IMCO two years ago and they were exceptionally helpful (they sell through Summit Racing). The fellow made sure I was ordering exactly what I needed for my 54/55 2-ton GMC with 270 engine. Summit gave me IMCO's customer service number.

IMCO has been bought out by another company (2013): AP Exhaust Technologies.

You might want to take a look at Walker #21028. This is what I used about a year ago after researching a close match to the original on my '57 with a 235. Straight through, 5" diameter, 21" muffler length, 25 3/4" total length with inlet/outlet pipes, 2" inlet diameter, 1 7/8"outlet diameter. Available at many auto parts stores, but I bought mine at Rockauto.com because they had a rebate available from Walker that brought the final price of the muffler down to about $15. Perfect fit with the rest of the pipes and hardware which are all stock.

Seeing Denny's post reminded me that I stumbled on a company that does exactly what Denny suggests back when I was researching my replacement muffler. I checked my files this morning to find the info.

If you call Waldron's Exhaust (or others), ask if their muffler matches the one shown in the Shop Manual (and shown by Denny in the thread-link given by Paul, above).

Woldron might be the outfit that a friend of mine had bend
pipes for his fantastically accurate restoration.
I'll stick my neck out again by saying that most all the
muffler shops that I've talked with will only bend the exhaust
pipe using the standard radius dies, which makes a rather
sharp bend in the down pipe leading back to the muffler. I've
requested that they step bend it to open up the radius but
they don't seem to know how to do that.
The original factory exhaust pipes were made with a large
radius sweeping bend in the exhaust.

I brought this up earlier on purchasing new exhaust system from Waldron exhaust. Ruth from the sales Dept explain to me there is a delay, at that time up to 6 weeks to fill the orders. There was such a demand at this time that there is a shortage of mufflers. I`m now in my 5 week, I prepaid for my order. First I`m not in a big hurry 2nd the prices are very reasonable
and they communicate very well about what items you need for your vehicle. I`ll give a heads up when I receive my order and install the setup. I ordered the aluminum setup for the 52 1/2 ton 3100 with shipping its under $400.00.

Here's the reply I got from Walker for an AD exhaust system:

"Thank you for your inquiry for Walker Exhaust. We appreciate
your interest in our products. I am sorry but we do not offer
replacement parts for your application."

Got a call from Fastenal that my Waldron exhaust system came in and was ready to pickup. They give you a choice of shipping the exhaust system. Fastenal is a lot cheaper then UPS. They don't have a tracking system and you have to go down to their delivery area to pick it up which is ok with me. The exhaust system is complete system including a muffler strap. Took almost 5 weeks to deliver it because of the demand and a shortage of mufflers from Canada. Very happy with the bends of the exhaust pipes and how easy it was to install. I did use permatex muffler sealer. The truck sounds a lot better now and looks very clean. I ordered the aluminum steel. I Highly recommend using Waldron Exhaust system. Ruth the sales administrator is very helpful in answering any questions about your vehicle.

restoration. Showed it to my 'big old wife' and

Must have missed the story, where did you find the box and
where did you find original plans to convert the '52?

Do you have a picture of the curve at the bottom of the
exhaust pipe. It looks like it is that correct sweeping
curve. Good looking exhaust kit, I can see why there is a
waiting list. Where does Fastenal come into the picture??
Is that the same Fastenal that sells the fasteners??
Why was the pipe dope necessary, did something fit not
so good?

Lastly....who is George? Saw it on the welders jacket.

Thanks Denny, George works for the county, he has a mobile welding setup and does all my welding. I did all the fabrication cutting all the metal and setting up for him to weld, he charges $75.00 hr. Fastenal is a shipping company, which Waldron Exhaust offers then going thru UPS. I saved about $50.00 by going with Fastenal. The muffler sealer was probably a over kill, not needed. The pipes fitted nice and tight on the muffler. The Good Humor truck is a reproduction that I design after the Danbury mint die cast 1:24 scale model. There is no blue prints for these trucks, not from the hackney brothers I could find. I found a company in long beach that makes a fiberglass reproduction of the old school Good Humor freezer boxes. It has two cold plates in the freezer box which I plug into a 120 volt outlet and charge 12 hours to a minus 5- degrees.I use a inverter to run the freezer box to maintain a charge. I wanted to do something different then just restore my 52 3100. I wanted to stand out and be different, why not a Good Humor Truck. I have now my ice cream business license. I`m a hit at the shows with everyone. I even dress up as the Good Humor Man. Finding the original hat pin and badge name tag from a retired Good Humor Man. I stock the truck with all Good Humor ice cream bars- toasted almond-strawberry cake-birthday cake- snow cones, etc
In one month after 3 years building this ice cream truck its one best of show at ATHS, first place at ford mustang show event, a photo shoot with Delicious Doll magazine , business offers for special appearances. Retired after 28 years at Caesars Palace as a in house maintenance painter. And now the Good humor Man. I should setup a gallery with the truck. I added more pictures of the curved exhaust pipe on the
earlier post.

Thanks for all the added info. That is certainly different for
sure.
It would certainly draw my attention at a show. I'm partial to
the AD's but I gotta admit, they get pretty boring when the
only difference between one and the other is the colors.

Have you thought about doing a nice write up for the Stovebolt
Gallery on the history and build? I'm sure it would get a lot
of attention.
We're probably gonna get thrown out of here cus we're not
talking about a muffler anymore, but what the hey, I'm used
to it after a decade.

I'll take a look at your album again and look for the exhaust
pipe pixs, and once more, thanks.
