Redesigned the rear sway bar support. The first one I made broke under duress. All good now. Truck is a dream to drive with the camper on

Fired up the 37 and it looks like the one year old battery is toast so time to find the receipt.

Drained the radiator on my '51 3100, removed the leaking 'new' (really) heater core from my '51 3100, stuck the two hose ends together and shut off the by-pass heater valve at the water pump. Now the shut off valve is leaking!! What the heck?? Classic Parts sent me a new core to replace the leaker with, but I decided I'm going to leave it out to repaint and install a 12 volt fan motor before I stick it back in. Also found the bed-to-running board skirts upper screws are no longer attached. I'll have to weld some flange metal to them when I pull things apart to repaint.

Checked my window that no longer is staying in it's channel when rolled down to see what's up. (Need new felt to re-stick it back in...later. Wanted to check the tranny and rear diff. oil, but decided it was not level enough on my "work shop on a hill" (my front curb), so I stopped there.

Jeff, depending on where you bought it they might have it on file. Been there & had to do that several times the past couple years.

Removed motor, transmission and enclosed driveline/pumpkin. Replaced pumpkin with a 55T for the future open driveline.

The fun parts were...

1) Right rear brake drum gave us fits getting it off.

2) Enclosed driveline removal was new for us, the shop manual came in handy.

3) The bottom three studs on the front of the rear end housing were rounded off, I guess from running under the truck all those years. The nuts came off, but won't go back on, need new studs there.

4) Transmission came out easily. The collection of mouse skeletons in the clutch bottom cover pan were interesting.

5) There were no bolts between the motor and the front mount, it was just sitting on there.

6) The amount of build up in the rear motor mounts hid the mount to frame bolts from us.

What made this part of the project fun was having an old friend and his son over to help. Great guys, lots of good conversation and laughs as we worked on the truck.

Took the Good Humor truck on its first drive test drove to the 7-11 convenience store.Bought two ice cream bars.Had a small crowd outside asking if I was selling ice cream and taking pictures of the truck. Working on getting my vendors license.I was very pleased the truck handled vary well on the road. Next week I`ll order the new exhaust system.

Stripped more paint yesterday. Man its getting old... Just have 1/2 the cab roof, 3/4 of the rear of the cab, and the passenger side door left to do...

Thanks Bill, I`m taking it over to a small car show at the Dealership that's sponsoring it this Saturday. Stop and pickup good humor ice cream bars , popsicles and bottle water to give out. I`m going to wear my good humor outfit . I don't know how I`ll handle the heat, its suppose to get 90 degrees Saturday. I will later install a blue and white removable canvas top.

I finally got my exhaust finished ! Very pleased with the result! Much better than the quick build last year. Also repainted the wheels and installed a temp gauge.

Just waiting for the fuel sending unit, which hopefully will come next week and then i'll be done with the truck for this season. Now i want to drive it from the beginning of spring to the end of autumn! I'll post pics later.

Started the wiring harness swap on the 54' this weekend- 75% complete I'd guess.

I need to run tail lights and 3rd brake light/ plate light and get parkign lights up front.

Headlights work- small victories are what seem to carry you through the tough spots...

Since last Thursday I've had my phone ring off the hook. Machine shop called & told me my motor was done & I could come listen to it on their motor stand Waiting on the final bill so I can pick it up this week. Transmission shop called & said my 400 turbo was done & now it sits in my garage. And on Saturday my friend Tony called & told me my rebuilt 8.8 rearend was ready to be picked up. I'll have to check my list but I think I have everything for my drive train & suspension and it's all either new or rebuilt.......joe

Rebuilt the complete heater motor, controls, core valve and the heater box on my 58.

Just ordered the new single exhaust system from www.waldronexhaust.com . Talk with ruth the sales administrator, because of high volume of orders there will be a delay of orders up to 6 weeks apparently shortage of mufflers. Regardless I placed the order Aluminum steel exhaust, a muffler strap, gasket and clamps. They ship the item in one box with three exhaust parts and the small items. The total cost was under $400.00.

I pulled the distributor in the burb today to inspect the gear for wear. It wasn't showing any. I had trouble getting it back in and when it finally went it was a tooth off. So I got out the vacuum gauge and timing light. She's running great at 15° BTDC and a little over 21 on the vacuum gauge. I wouldn't be skeert to hop in it and drive to Montana.

I finally got the title squared away and license stuff taken care of. Had to apply for lost title, have it changed to my name and buy the license. Total cost, $88. And since I get the collectors plate, I never have to pay for license or tabs again! Now, I can finally drive it home. I can't wait! First stop? Car wash.

Gauges and speedometer are out and after finally receiving the correct decal set, (3rd time lucky) now ready to update them. Dash bracket is welded and dash stress cracks are next.

The truck showed erratic charging during a run earlier this week. It turned out that the pivot bolt had worked its way out at the bottom of the alternator. It's fixed now, double nuts on that sucker.

Big hairy deal, I know, but my truck is ready to work again when I need it.

Got the ol' girl back up on stands and the leaf springs out. Putting in new shackles and pivot bolts. First time I've been in the garage since October.

Also finally started updating my truck blog again.

I got the OG radio installed, connected and playing. YEAH me

Yeah, I did that part already (cutting the hole) but I can sure relate to the sanding. Past two days has been the last epoxy primer coat (just too many sand thru to the bare metal to ignore) and final shot of K36 High Build Urethane primer on the entire cab inside and out.

This means I have sanded every square inch of the cab (inside and out) EVERY SQUARE INCH, twice. First at 80 grit, then 220. This final coat is for the 400 grit. That will be it then. Once I put on the Epoxy sealer, its ready for base/clear. So, I had my brother in law come over today to help me put the cab on the firewall so I can get epoxy and urethane under too. Then, more sanding! I do everything by hand. No power sanding. With 400 grit there wont be quite as much blood mixed in!

Stop by at Warrior Wraps they did all the vinyl graphics on my Good Humor truck some time ago.Had them make two magnetic signs for the reader board ( not in Service) sign. The reader board I design from oak wood and had the fabrication shop wrap the front with metal and the edges. Then glued them both together and installed the threaded insert rivets, to mount on top edge of freezer box. Also while I was at warrior wraps I had the designer come up with the letter words" Good Humor" on the backside of the freezer box. So when people are driving up and they`ll see its an ice cream truck an not be freak out.

I got the tranny and driveshaft in the chassis - sm420 with center bearing - couldn't finish because I still need couple 1/2" X 1 1/2" stainless bolts and locks for the mounts. This is a milestone. Nice feeling. Almost ready for the motor and rad support; cab is still on rotisserie in driveway and bed still out in back yard, and for spring/summer work welding and sanding outside. One more year?

Just drove around the block after clutch and brake Overhaul wish it had paddles as well wouldn't mind heading to mechanics ville for homecoming sounds like a fun weekend on the bucket list

One more year for me lasted six. LOL

Well today I made new battery cables out of 2/0 Welding cable and bought a new Optima Battery. Tomorrow I will install the battery and new cables. My son, who just turned 18, wants to drive my truck this summer.

Bled all the brakes, made sure there were no leaks, and installed the new MC access door since I converted to the dual MC

Removed the master and all four wheel cylinders. They are all in great shape, only need rebuild kits.

Not bad for sitting for 45 years.

Now looking at bearings and shoes.

last week on my '65 c10 :

replaced the heater defroster hoses with pieces from classic parts of america... they slipped on nice and snug with no issues.

replaced a few of the glove box screws with some reproduction ones, which are close, but not exact. However, at least they are all phillips heads now and the wonky over sized flat slotted screws are gone.

also I took off the valve covers to the later model SBC and painted 'em with engine enamel - gray, then the chevy orange red... looks kinda spiffy but that was a lot of work just getting 'em clean and prepping 'em to paint. Oh well, maybe the paint will make it run better. /sarcasm

It was good to do some wrenching on it again, fixing a few things at a time.

A few months back I had to epoxy the back of the fuse panel - to keep the metal snap for the glass bulb fuses in place - it kept walking around and turning off the heater in the cold!

Got the cab and front clip in primer today!!! First time spraying paint, so I'll need to do some sanding, but it could have turned out way worse!

I welded my first patch panel today. I started with my 1930 because it was a flat piece. It came out good though.

I change the diff head in preparation for the trip (600km) down to Dunedin this weekend. The pinion nut has been rattling loose for a couple of years now and I thought it time to stop that

Received my new Grade 8 bolts from McMaster Carr to replace the cheap Chinese grade 5s that have actually bent on my lower Mustang 2 suspension arms,the roads round here are little more than tarmac farm tracks.
I cleaned up/ground the crossmember to add extra strengthening gussets to try and eliminate any further problems.

Just need to call in the services of my friend Gerry who i'll get to weld the gussets in more substantually this time!

A nut here and a weld there; before long you may work yourself out of a hobby John. lol

So this past weekend I put in new plugs and rebuilt the carb. Tonight I reworked the carb mounting gasket because it didn't have all the right holes. This allowed me to adjust the idle mixture getting me closer to drivability.

Even trying to get the 5/8"-16x12" grade 8 bolts here was a chore,hence the reason I opted for McMaster Carr in the USA,once again my pal in Va. came to the rescue with shipping. (I sure have had a lot of strange 'gifts' from her...)
Shipping as a "gift,value under $50" avoids too much tax and other shennanigans,although it still cost $32 just to get them here....

Every time I think things are finally going well the dang thing bites me on the bum.(again!)

Since my redundancy the truck has been my daily.

As you probably know I've had my fair share of suspension gremlins and have now found the banjo fitting on the front calipers are touching the airsprings on full steering lock. (I'll ask about that in the Hi-Po forum though.)

To use another Scottish expression "I'm just aboot scunnered wi' it!"
