'49 half ton. Is the switch spring loaded or does it drop by gravity when brake is pushed? Mine just stays on the firewall. Thanks.

The switch should be spring loaded so that it drops when the brake pedal is pushed. I would guess that is the problem with your switch.
Good luck

Thanks Jim, thought that was probably the case. Just need to have new one in hand before I start repair.

Long story short...pulled the switch and opened it up hoping that it was just gunky. No luck, the spring had broken! Replacement on the way. Wonder how long it's been broken?

I replaced my brake switch too, but it was slightly shorter than OEM for some reason... So when i braked full (pedal as far pushed in as possible) the switch would come over the brake pedal and brakelights where ignited untill i would push the switch back by hand. So compare the old with the new switch so you know they're identical before you install it. If yours is shorter to you could just weld it a bit longer.

Also there is one with the arm on the opposite end of the switch. My '56 apparently had the wrong one. After I replaced it with what the FLAP store insisted was the right one I had to add to my harness.
