I have a 49 Chevy pickup 3100'
I have purchased a chrome steering wheel with the shifter on the column. Can someone give me advice on removing the old one an replacing it with the new one. Do I remove it by bringing it up through the fire wall or pull it down. I do have the drivers side fender an inner fender remove. Any advise would sure be helpful. Thanks guys.

You ask how to remove the steering wheel, but you might mean the steering assembly.

To remove the steering assembly, remove:

- steering wheel
- all shift levers/etc from column to transmission
- steering column to dash brace
- steering column boot/ring at the floor (upwards)
- steering box/assembly bolts from the frame (after disconnecting attachment rod from steering box to tie rod)

Do not forget the bolt that is beneath the steering box, inside the frame rail.

You then lower the steering assembly (out of the cab, under the can/frame).

If I am going to replace the steering column only will I still need to take the steering box off the frame?

if you're wanting to replace the mast jacket only, you'll have to remove it from the rest of the assembly - see the diagram further along Tims link .... best done off the truck
