I have a 46 chevy truck with a gmc engine in it I will be parting out the motor but need to ID it correctly.
number on the block by the distributor is E248298819
number on manifold is 21948177
Any help would be appreciated. Todd

The first numbers of the engine ID indicate it's a 248 cubic inch. Someone else will need to decipher it beyond that information as I'm not terribly knowledgeable about the particulars of GMC terminology. Is there some reason to tear it down rather than to try to sell it as a complete engine?

some parts have been removed already..external stuff..long block is complete..it was a good running motor.

The "E" before the 248 indicates:
1. standard cylinder bore
2. -0.010 main bearing journals on the crankshaft
3. standard rod bearing journals on the crankshaft

None of the codes you have given will help ID the year of the engine (which was made from 1939-1955), but the size, 248, should be enough for selling it.

Here are locations of other casting codes - the date casting codes would be most interesting/useful.

Does your block have a brass plate "pinned" to the block to the right rear of the generator?
