hey guys, i am possibly getting a 305e v6 out of a 64 gmc in a few weeks, but i was wondering what sheet metal must be removed to pull the engine, would it be just the hood or possibly the whole front clip? if i do need to take off more than just the hood, how will this stuff come loose? i've never had the privilage of working on a 60-66 body style truck before and i might also say that the truck is being parted out so the guy might not be real happy with me if i tore up his sheet metal, even though the truck is in rough shape, blush

thanks in advance,

Indy wink

Take off hood, then take off front clip as one piece. And Radiator of course. Way easier to take motor out and if he is selling sheet metal , why not. Not that many bolts. I have a 60 4x4 with a 305. and an extra parts 305 also.

OK, good, so the fenders will come off in one piece, these trucks just look difficult to take apart then grin also, the rad has been sold, so no worrys there

this engine will be a "back up" engine for my '69 but will go in the truck as soon as I get it, the '69 305e will be under construction in a few months but I need the truck for my springtime jobs coming up. as soon as the '69 v6 is ready, the 64 will get pulled and stored and eventually rebuilt, or so thats the plan

Clip access near door hinges and under fender extensions. Hood hinges stay on clip. Inner and outer fender stay together as do the rad cross members and grille. take off front bumper first. Two or three guys to lift. You can get motor out without doing this but it is much easier if you take off clip. Up to you. If the tranny cross member is riveted, you may run into a problem with motor/tranny being "trapped". In that case you have to unbolt tranny and leave behind. If cross member is bolted, take it off.

ahhhh ok! thanks for the heads up about the cross member! I was assuming that it is bolted on and I would have been really stumped as to how to remove everything. Also, the tranny is a SM-420 granny gear, if that makes a difference when pulling the engine/tranny combo.

A lot of them have a 420 4sp compound low. In my experience with a 63, we had to disconnect tranny and pull motor and then rotate/scuffle the tranny out the bottom of frame. The tranny would not fit/slide forward between the floor/toe board and the cross member.

so the tranny can stay put when I pull the engine? I don't mean to be dense, but the only other SM-420 that I've pulled was in my 55 1.5 ton, and it just hangs off of the bell housing with no supports under it making it a real bear to pull by itself, haha. also I am not buying the tranny, so leaving it in will be helpful for me and him if that is all possible, but if I need to pull it I will.

Yes it can but you will have to see if it really needs to by inspecting clearances and cross member attachment. I did a 63 GMC and had to disconnect tranny from bell housing. The shifter will come off and disconnect driveshaft. I'm sure other ideas will emerge.
