Hello,

1949 chevy 3100

I have 3 wires coming out of my original harness for the tail lights... one has 12 volts and the other two have nothing. Can someone tell me what these other two wires do? And how do i get my light to brighten when i push the brake pedal? Ive got a wiring diagram but its very small and i just cant see it good enough.

try this diagram - if you've got 3 wires and 12V, you no longer have a stock setup, so you're the only one who can figure it out - start tracking wires .... with the single tail light there should be one wire for the running light, and one wire for the brake light - there should only be a voltage reading on either of them when the brakes/lights are on

I think you may have misunderstood. .. I have 3 wires and this is factory wiring as you can see from the photo below. Yes someone has spliced them but none the less this is the original wiring going back to the taillights... I cut the butchered crap out previous owner had rigged up and now I want to fix it.

look at the diagram I linked, upper right shows 2 wires to the tail - if the wires you show are under the cab, the 3rd wire will be to the gas tank sending unit - still leaves you with using an ohmmeter to track which is what, or stripping that rotten cloth off to visually determine which is which - and the wire showing voltage will be for the circuit you have live, headlight switch on, brake light switch closed, power to gas gauge ..... usually the battery should be disconnected when wiring is in that condition!!
