Who do you guys use for Powder Coating wheels?

I called ASCO in Manassas and got quoted $95 per wheel...seems high to me.

Mike- how much of a hurry are you in? We have a nice coating shop here in Philadelphia minutes from the shop we worked on the 47. Send me a picture and I will get you a quote. I can carry them back from homecoming if you would like.

A local powder coating company quoted me $90 per 20" multi-piece wheel on my 54/55 2-ton GMC 2-ton COE.

This would be blasting, priming, and final coat (semi-gloss black). I will be taking 8 wheels to him in next month. I'll post info on this after/if I get this done.

I had mine done at ASAP Powdercoating up in WV. They shot blasted, powder primed, and powder coated all included for I think $25 or $30 each perhaps 10 years ago... unfortunately they're a lot more expensive now, more in line with what others are mentioning.
They did do an excellent job though, better than some other powder coated wheels I've seen.

Would i be steeling the thread if I ask a question? I plan on using the original 7.00x18 rims for the 1-ton dually. There is a spring steel ring used to keep the rim together when I mount the tire/tube/liner. If I powder coat my rims, won't that spring ring butcher up the face of the rim during reassembly ?

I figure if I paint them, I could go back and touch up ? Thoughts?

Mike, ASCO did the wheels on the '46 for around 100.00 a piece back in '03. That's 3 piece wheels sand blast and powder coat. I had them do the 22.5 wheels for the 860 about a year and a half ago for the same price but they of course are just the single piece rim.
Classic Powdercoating in Gaithersburg did a bunch of other stuff for me last summer and did a good job. Seemed reasonable enough .

Joe -- Yes that's exactly the dilemma with the multi-piece rims and why a lot of guys just paint them rather than powder coat them.

Unless the tire shop guys are super careful ... If it were me, I would just paint a multi-piece wheel and touch up as needed. Wheel will look almost as nice.

My 2 cents.

I've assembled some multi piece wheels for a quite fancy and nicely restored 1928 Hudson. The wheels were painted and perfect, lock rings chromed as I recall. I was not allowed to harm paint or chrome... It really wasn't that hard to do using some tape on the tools and many pieces of a cut up antifreeze or oil jug between the parts as they slipped together and to further pad the tool.

I also put tires on my 22.5 wheels which were powder coated, used the same tricks. Also no trouble at all and no harm to the finish. Tubeless tires are quite easy to install in comparison though.

I think that given the same care at assembly (do it yourself, not at tire shop) you'll find good quality powder coating to be more durable and less risk of damage than painted wheels.
Also, no reason at all you can't touch up a nick in powdercoat with paint if it becomes necessary.
