I'm changing the starter on my 2 ton. I see this wire just hanging in that general area. When it gets close to the motor it arcs electricity. For all I can tell it comes over the engine to the driver side of the block and connects to a part in the block . I have a Goodwrench 350 . What the heck is this part, and where is this wire supposed to go? I need to get a good manual, but I'm hoping someone here can help me figure this out.

Hy Tipidweller, welcome, please remember to tell us the year of truck you're asking about and any modifications it may have had, such as a switch from six to twelve volts. Is the wire in question hot all the time? The wire may be an alternator output wire if alternator equipped. What gauge is the wire, what size or type of terminal is on the end of the wire, what colour is the wire?

it sounds like you are just going to have to do this the old fashioned way. Just figure it out. Just saying "a wire hanging down by the starter" doesn't really mean anything to pretty much anyone. In the period of anywhere of 30-60 years (we have no idea what year your truck is) a lot of things can happen. Previous owners can (and many times do) really strange things, add devices, remove devices, repair, ruin, and/or otherwise disfigure things. A picture might help, with the information given we don't stand a chance. "connects to a part in the block?" Really?

There are wiring diagrams available online for many old vehicles. And even if your particular vehicle is not listed, one that is close in year may give you a clue.Search for old manuals.---Jack

O.k thanks. I drive a 66 big bolt. I mentioned, it has a 350 Goodwrench crate motor. I figured: how many parts are built into the engine block? It's maybe a block heater? Anyhow, it don't seem to be hurting anything. Once again, thanks for the replies.

Since it doesn't bother anything I wouldn't worry about it. BBBButt I would definitely tape up the end so it doesn't short against something and then cause a problem. JMO.
