For helping keep this great
old truck web site
on the Internet for over 30 years! and not clogged down with Ads! Again, thanks! | | | | Joined: Feb 2008 Posts: 1,124 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Feb 2008 Posts: 1,124 | Need to know length of the approx 5/16 diameter brace (Rod) on the bottom rear fenders. Have three, but one is badly bent, the others are missing the ends opposite the fender attachment bolt. Don't know if these were straight or curved. Checked the parts catalog without finding reference. Thanks in advance. | | | | | Joined: Feb 2008 Posts: 1,124 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Feb 2008 Posts: 1,124 | Maybe this photo (below) will help explain the mystery? The sheet metal braces shown on top and bottom are what the vendor catalogs sell for the '46 1/2 ton truck (and other years). The 5/16" diameter rods are what I removed from several of the fenders collected--in addition to the curved and folded sheet metal braces shown. Vendors catalogs nor the master parts catalogs seem to show replacements for the rod braces. I know for certain the one rod, without any paint, was removed from a '46 Chevy 1/2 ton, as I removed the fender and rod myself from a donor. Could there be a difference in pre-war models for these and explain the mystery? The master parts catalogs seem to indicate a possibility, but? Fender Braces | | | | | Joined: Feb 2008 Posts: 1,124 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Feb 2008 Posts: 1,124 | It appears the rod brace was used on '40 and '41 trucks only. The sheet metal brace at inside top center was used from ' 40 to early '47. My confusion on all this with my project may be rooted in the '46 production timing. My '46 project and apparently the donor truck referenced came off the production line soon after production restarted, following the war. As I understand it, at that time many of the early products used parts left over from pre-war parts inventory. | | | | | Joined: Mar 2000 Posts: 784 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Mar 2000 Posts: 784 | Sparky, My 46 has the support rods you mention. It's right around 13" long. I had to remake one also. Easy to do, just mash the end of the rod and drill a hole in it. It goes from the frame to the lip of the fender. Just cut to fit.
