I know 700 R4s are made for both 2 and 4 wheel drive. I found one for 4wd for sale, but can I use it just for my 2 wheel drive? and just not use the 4wd part? 1987 and newer, 30 spline, Thats what I'm looking for. thanks,

You would need to rebuild it with a different output shaft and extension housing. The 4X4's have a short shaft and an adapter that mates the trans to the transfer case- - - -no way to connect to the rear driveshaft without the transfer case attached, and running the transfer case without the front drive equipment in place would add a bunch of weight and complexity for no good reason. Virtually all the S-10 automatic trans rigs with the V6 engine ran a 700R4, there should be thousands of them available.

I don't know what engine you're running, but if you get one from an S10, look for one with the 4.3 V6. The 2.8 version has a different bellhousing bolt pattern from the 4.3 and V8 engines.

Just FYI the later 4L60E's found behind LS engines have a different length input shaft. I would look for a 85-92 trans personally.

I would actually look for a 200-4R, not a 700R4.

The 700 is cheaper, stronger, has better gearing, is far more common, and is rated for truck use.

I'm a little crippled up from my motorcycle wreck, but I think I could still outrun anyone who tried to give me a 200-4R! That thing shares too many parts and pieces with the worst automatic transmission GM ever made, the Turbo 200 Metric!

Those things are completely subjective. Cheaper? It depends. Stronger? Stock yes but may not matter, depends on what engine is in the vehicle. Rated for truck use? We don't know if it matters in this case.

The 200 can be built to be stronger than the 400 and is easier to hook up, and is shorter. It's an easier swap, but the other things might outweigh that depending on its usage.

I wish I had a 200-R4 laying around. I'd drive all the way to Dellrose, TN just to check on HRL's recovery progress.
Is Dellrose even on the map?
