| | | | Joined: Jul 2006 Posts: 186 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Jul 2006 Posts: 186 | Pulled my tranny to install a new clutch and find the flywheel has some hair line cracks radiating out from center to about a half inch and a few what I think might be stress cracks about a 1/4 inch long in various places around the disk surface. Can I just have it turned down by a machine shop to clean up the surface? or do I really need to get a replacement. If I need to replace it where do I get one - Ebay? . Does someone sell new ones?

Minor heat checks don't usually give a problem unless the flywheel is being abused by high RPM launches and kamikaze clutch dumps.

Whereupon I discovered the flywheel I had installed with the tiny little hairline cracks as described above, had turned into major fissures. Which explained the chattering I had developed. I'll keep an ear open for a chatter. I'd go for a new flywheel but can't find a supplier. Everything I see is for small block chevy's. Used stuff on eBay is probably worse that what I already have. They also said all the hairline fisures were just superficial and now they are all gone. Now if I can find some of the bolt retainers I can reinstall it and be good to go. Thanks for the tips and advice guys.

The PO who "rebuilt" it before he sold it to me cross-threaded a flywheel bolt and then left it out. A star washer or a split lock washer would be a bad idea.
Loctite on the threads also makes a good oil seal.
