Gonna start painting the 2 tone portions of my project. Omni Brand. I thought I would paint the first color(black), let it dry at least as long as the tech sheet says, tape it off and then go with the next color(burgundy).
My questions: Am using the low tack blue masking tape, just a generic brand. Is this OK or do I need something special.
After I paint the second color and I pull the tape there will be a line. Is the normal proceedure to clear over this and make it disapear that way? Most of this line will be in a seam but not all of it.
thanks
Jim

I've had trouble with the blue stuff not being sticky enough. I like the $$ 3M green stuff. If you're using a base/clear you shouldn't have too bad of a break line because you don't need as much color as you would with enamel or urethane. The clear does most of the work. Are you striping between the two colors or are you leaving the break line exposed?

I believe the blue tape is household stuff. Keith is correct get the 3M good stuff.
You may want to get some "fine line" tape. It comes in different dimensions, 1/16, 1/8, 2/4...
You can find it at your local Paint store.
This will give you a very nice line. Masking tape has a rough edge.
Lay this tape out and then apply the 3M stuff with paper on top of that.
Good Luck!

The blue stuff has a crepe to it which lets paint bleed under it and I find it useless for nice edges even in the house. You want automotive masking tape, the fine line or the green stuff. You might want to visit your auto paint store.

That blue stuff has given me problems in the house too.

I have heard of covering the line with clear. I have also heard of using an extremely fine sandpaper for evening out the line. Sanding to me though sounds dangerous (but I have no experience here).

Check out the Autobodystore.com forums.
I have never done any work like this but it seems the problem you describe is the same one you would encounter doing stripes or flames. there are several discussions on this at the Autobodystore.

Don't you know who I think I am?
I've been thinkin' about freaking out. If I could just find the time.

well I painted last weekend and had really good results. Did buy the edging tape but I think the clear would cover about anything. The tape did make a nice clean edge though. Will post picts when their buffed.

46 Burb, glad that it worked out. I was hoping to get my first color on my cab this weekend but I havn't got the paint yet. Maybe today. It's coming in the mail.
I'm actually painting single stage on the interior then taping that off to paint the rest with the two stage exterior color. I will be using the fine line tape myself.
Show some pics when you can!

The blue tape is made for long term placement.
