There was one at a car show. | | | | Joined: Sep 2001 Posts: 29,262 Bubba - Curmudgeon | Bubba - Curmudgeon Joined: Sep 2001 Posts: 29,262 | No.
There was a 1/2 ton bed, a 3/4 ton bed, and a 1 ton bed for Chevrolet trucks.
GMC had a 1/2 ton short bed and long bed (the long bed was the length of the 3/4 ton bed).

Carl "anyone else" - have you seen one, Carl? What was the year and model number? It looks like all model 3/4 ton 150 GMC trucks from 1941 through 1955 (Z-series) had the same 125.25" wheel base (making them model 152). Presumably, there was one bed size for that one wheel base? There were three different wheel bases on GMC model 250 (1 ton) trucks in 1947-1950 and 1954/55. Presumably, there was a different bed size for each wheel base? 1-ton Models: 251 = 116" (short wheel base "short bed"?) 252 = 125.25" 253 = 137" There was no 116" model 251 GMC in 1951-1953. | | | | Joined: Mar 2010 Posts: 10,059 Renaissance Man | Renaissance Man Joined: Mar 2010 Posts: 10,059 | I saw one for sale in a shopping center parking lot. I crawled under it and it had the original riveted on center carrier bearing bracket/cross member. The transmission had the stubby, enclosed, u-joint setup. It had the 3/4 ton style leaf spring perches riveted on the frame. It had a 116" wheel base, with 8 lug split rims. It had a 228 GMC engine. I tried to go back to take pictures, but it was already gone. It did not have a bed. The frame was not shortened. Too bad I already have 3 trucks, or I would have bought it. I have to keep the first wife happy if I want to have a place to stay (and a place to keep all my crap). Carl

Did you see Elvis there also? There is no underlying doubt here, just wondering. | | | | Joined: Mar 2010 Posts: 10,059 Renaissance Man | Renaissance Man Joined: Mar 2010 Posts: 10,059 | No, but we can't rule out a random flashback. Sure seemed real though. "Drugs are bad, hmkay?"

However, the "islands of lucidity" are now dim memories.

Appears to be scans of pages of a 1954 GMC produced parts book with identification of models by serial numbers. Scroll to the bottom for the original sources. This page shows that in 51-54 they did make long bed 1/2 tons, did not make short bed 3/4 tons, and long and super long bed 1 tons. Interestingly enough, it also shows that they made swb (116") 1 tons in 47-50, and starting again in '54. However, it's possible that those were only sold as cab-n-chassis, say for a tow truck setup or similar. I do realize the OP was asking about Chevy, but GMC was brought up so I thought I'd throw this out there.
Thanks, David
