I have a question here. I am putting in a 292 and a 350 turbo tranny on the truck. I am going to be taking out the rear axle, what type of rear axle is as good swap for fit and higher gear for the highway. I am hoping for a direct fit with no cutting down the axle. Thank you for your help.

Someone else will probably chime in with more specifics as to the best gear choice with your drivetrain setup (I'm still learning) but I swapped a Dana 60 out of a 1971 C-20 into the back of my '54 3600 no problem.

The axle is a hair wider than the stock one, think i gained an inch? on each side but the wheels still fit inside the fenders (and I'm running radials). The only fab work was cutting off the old axle perches and welding new ones on to fit the '54 frame.

My Dana 60 has 4:10 gears which work fine for me. I think there are more options though if you wanted higher ones.

The other common swap is the GM 14 bolt rear axle, which from my research would be similar work wise to install, but they are pretty easy to find.

Hope that helps some,

Chooglin

This will get me mobbed on a Chevy site, but nothing beats a Ford 9" axle. NASCAR uses them at 200 MPH and 600 HP. Try one out of an E150 van to get close to the right track width.

If you're wanting to stay 8 lug, a Dana 60 from a B250 Dodge van will fit very nice. 3.55 is a very common ratio in those.

Thank you for the help. I am having a friend search for an axle for me. Looking forward to getting the project going again.
