Looking at ideas for painting my 1 ton. I am doing this whole truck myself and am on a tight budget as I only intended to build a 1/2 ton. Weird how these trucks seem to follow us home hey? I want it to look big, mean and sleek. The1/2 ton will be the elegant one.
I figure a flat black with silver and chrome detailing would look pretty sharp. I read this article:

http://www.hotrod.com/how-to/paint-...-affordably-flat-painting/#__federated=1

Looks like this might work for me. But I ask this:
Is there a way to top coat/ seal in this paint job? Did I miss something?

I think that paint would be termed a top coat and provides a seal (Rustoleum calls it a top coat).

Hey Fox - for most people the intent of the flat black was a cheap primer job to to give it all one color. If you intend on putting on a flat clear coat you are getting into more money. You can also buy a single stage flat paint that is automotive grade or you can get the John Deere version. No disrespect intended to anyone with either, it is just about what you want to spend vs how long you wish it to last.

I wanted the same look as you but I ended up with using a flat clear over a 2004 GM sunburst orange metallic color. Looks fantastic on my test panels but it is all real paint that cost me real money cry

Good Luck

Another possibility is using tractor paint. If you have a local tractor supply a lot of them have tractor and implement paint. Tractor Supply is local to me and I've used both Valspar and Majic paint on my truck. Tractor Supply Matte paint link. . I've not used this black but have used both cream and gloss black. My truck picture here. Hope this helps in your decision. Have fun and good luck.

Yes that is tractor paint. As a matter of fact the cab and front end is BPS(Valspar) and the bed is Majic. Colors matched quite well. Hardener was used with both.

Well you've sold me brother! That looks mighty fine and just what the '36 1.5 ton is looking for. Nice color too. Might hit ya with a pm later to get the color and some mixing advice. Thanks!

Dan, was the hardener included with the paint? If not, what brand did you use?

Yes hardener was an additional cost. Here's the one I used last. You can catch all their paint at Tractor Supply on sale. Sign up for there online flyers. Good Luck and have fun.

Look up SPI (southern polyurethanes) They sell single stage and base/clear with a flatter. Higher end UV protection without a high price. I squirt a lot of majic paint, but not on a truck I spent many a hour and split many a knuckle on.

Yet another option:

Sherwin Williams offers Barrett Jackson Restoration Paint Kits, in gallons and quarts. It's 2-part urethane, so it should paint and last better than Rustoleum. Still single stage, no clearcoat needed. Pricier than the Rusto option, but cheaper than full custom stuff. It comes in a Satin Black. Lots of videos on Youtube about it.

Check it out: Barrett Jackson Paint Kit
