I had a door window replaced over 20 years ago.Now the glass has come out of metal strip that ataches to the bottom of the window.How do i go abought mateing them back to gether.I asume its a glue?Any specif brands.Thanks,Ron

What year truck?

I do not know about other years, but the glass on Advance Design doors are held in place with a glass setting tape (I think it is made up of soapstone and fabric and other things. Of course, I could be dreaming). The "tape" is available from most repo parts vendors (Chevy Duty has tape for 47-50 and 51-54 - full-pane and vented doors). You set the glass in a u-channel made from the tape and then put mineral oil (or engine oil) on the tape. The oil expands the tape and the window is set.

Tim,i think that preety well answered my question.It is on a 51 1/2 ton.I thought it was set with adhesive.Ill have to order some tape.Thanks for your reply,Ron.

The setting tape is good stuff. I like to use "3M Super Weatherstrip Adhesive " in place of the oil. They dont call this stuff " Gorilla Snot " for nothin'.

Just run down to your local glass shop. They still use the stuff. There are different thicknesses so you might take the frame and glass with you. Joe

Before you order some, try calling some of your local glass shops. Best bet is with the ones that have been in business forever. The tape comes in different thicknesses, too. It's not as easy as it sounds.

Now that you know the correct way to set your glass, here's another way that will work . Clean the mating surfaces of the track and glass completely ending with laquer thinner. Use any color of silicone caulk you prefer for "glue" , let it cure, trim excess with a utility knife, and the glass is set. Silicone caulk bonds well to both glass and metal as long as they are clean. As an example fish tanks are put together using clear silicone.
