It had water in oil and pumping grey oil up to valves. I have now hooked up the radiator and put in anti-freeze to run it and make sure block wasn't cracked and water getting to oil. Well, I had it running quite awhile last night and looks good. I changed oil too. Was grey to valves for awhile, but changed to dark oil after running some. I have one bad intake valve spring and when I touched the rocker it affected it running and made a tapping noise. Did you know when you rev these engines, the rockers look like they stop? At first I thought the valves on some quit working, till I touched them and felt them move. The more you rev, the less they look like their moving. It's weird! I've never run one past idle with cover off before. Also, didn't seem to smoke like last time. Not sure if it's just "cleaning-out" or if it was just the oily/hot head before with no water. I have the big oil ports plugged off, some say won't oil with those plugged. It was that way in truck. The darn thing starts right up now, I'm happy with it.

I got mine fired up back during the Christmas Holidays, it hadn't run in about 3yrs., when I bought the truck back in the spring, it would start, but not run, I had to rebuild the Carter updraft carb. it had on it. | | |

Or did the 54 have the smaller pump, same as the 235's? I wouldn't think GM would introduce a new engine with old pumps one year and make all new parts for 55 up? But, maybe they did that stuff back then. You have a wide belt? Has your rad been modified or parts of mounting? I'm thinking you could move the rad to inside the support like I've seen on many trucks, but the tin shroud on top has to be cut to do that and looks like a jury-rig build.  And, I'm not that sure it IS that easy on a COE, as the metal is much diff than most trucks there.

I'll take a look at it tommorow. I have the '54 parked next to my '53 COE , I'll compare the water pumps. The '53 has the original 235 in it. | | |
