I have a 49 1/2 ton and starting to work on steering problems (steering wheel has 1/4 of a turn slop in it) but while I was on the under side looking around I saw that the truck has no shocks on it. I can see where there has been shock brackets added but never any shocks. My question is do I need to take a measurement from top bracket to bottom bracket or is there a standard shock for a 49? I will need them for the front and back. Thanks for any info.

The problem is that you would need both the full compression and full extension lengths. On the 49s, the factory shock would have been the lever style, rather than the tubular "aircraft" style shocks found on the '50 and later. However, since the shocks for the '50 are still available, that's what I would suggest you go with.

O'Reilly shows them in Monroe, $21.99 for the rear, $23.99 for the front. They can usually have them next day, no shipping cost. Or, if you get to the store early enough, possibly even same day, depending on how far they are from the d/c and if they have them on hand.
